Book Club and a Sunday matinee

I went to the movie Book Club on the weekend. I left my husband at home and watched it with a friend. I figured it would be an uber-chick flick that he'd rather clean out the garage than see. Chick flick it was, but funny, not all weepy and depressing. Going solo also meant I had the popcorn to myself.

Candice Bergen, Jane Fonda, Mary Steenburgen, and Diane Keaton are four aging college friends who meet once a month for a book club —make that wine and book club . When Jane Fonda’s character decides to spark things up with her selection of the month—50 Shades of Gray—it changes all of their lives.

As a romance writer, I’m always looking for a happy ending. I can’t help it, happily ever after is important to me. Right now, I’m reading action—a series by Andy McDermott—action, adventure and a love interest—my favourite. I am a bit worried. The last adventure series I read, the love interest literally lost her head.

To quote Susan Elizabeth Phillips:

“When male authors write love stories, the heroine tends to end up dead.”

Maybe the reason I liked Book Club was what could be better than seeing four of my favourite actresses in a comedy coming of age film. After all, aren't we always coming of age? Why do teenagers get all the credit? Sprinkle in veteran actors like Don Johnson, Andy Garcia, Ed Begley Jr., and Richard Dreyfuss and the ante on the fun factor goes up.

Rotten Tomatoes gave Book Club 59%. I looked at the reviews and reviewer’s pics. Interesting to note that reviewer age influences the like or dislike for this film. I get it, maybe it isn't as funny to 20 to 40-year-old's as it was to me.
