Magick is real. Never doubt it.
The dark mage Jahkon has power. He will take yours as well.

The blood of great mages runs in Danika’s veins. She is sister to Jahkon, the dark mage of Remarne, but they are vastly different. Her magick is pure, full of life and energy. His is ancient, built of blood and shadows.

Jahkon’s magick grows black and twisted, but Danika can’t give up on him. When he orders her to marry one of his followers, she’s forced to run.

Armed with nothing but her wits, aided by a spy and an escaped prisoner, Danika heeds the dragon’s warnings and flees the city of her birth.

Jahkon won’t let her go. He needs her power and the blood of the dragon to become immortal. Now a fugitive, Danika enters a world unlike any she’s ever known. To stay alive, she must trust her life to her new companions. What begins as an escape becomes a desperate race to save the dragon and fulfil the ancient Prophecy of Harmony.

A Path of Fire: The Prophecy of Helligon is the first book in a fantasy series by C. A. Kinnee, a cleverly plotted book with strong and elaborately accomplished characters.

I will get straight to what I love about this story. First, it is balanced. The author doesn't sacrifice character for the plot and the world-building is impeccably imagined and executed.

The story pits brother against sister in a magical world where the balance of magic is strongly shaken. Jahkon is the villain who wants to increase his power and nothing will stop him. He is clever and very cunning, getting into alliances in a bit to acquire the most powerful magic that will make him immortal. His sister is docile, a gifted soul who is simple and cares about the order in her world. She will do anything to stop her brother from laying hands on the one thing that will give him immortality.

The writing is wonderful. The characters are fully and finely drawn and the magical world is intelligently executed. I loved every bit of this story, from the great prose to the relatable characters.

Carol Kinnee's A Path of Fire: The Prophecy of Helligon Book 1 follows Danika, a girl born into a family of magic. However, she dreams of using her magic to help people and spread goodness. But what she doesn't know is that she is about to be faced with the most disturbing challenge and enigma in her life. It is her brother: Jahkon. Jahkon's magic differs from his sister's because it pushes him on the brink, fires him up with an unquenchable thirst for more power. It seems like nothing will stop him. He devises a means to get the one thing that will make his eternal — access to the magic of the dragon. Will Danika watch and see him go to ruin or will she rise up in the fight to make things right by saving the dragon? Crafted in beautiful prose, this novel transports readers into a magical world where unpredictable things happen. It's a wonderful opening for a series and a real page turner.

A Trail of Embers

by C.A. Kinnee

The race to fulfil the Prophecy of Harmony starts now

In the ancient walled city of Vendonne, being different paints a target on your back. Among the town’s blonde inhabitants, the street girl Meara, with her black hair and grey eyes, stands out.

To stay alive, Meara relies on her quick wits and faster feet. Deep in the alleys of Vendonne, she stumbles on a treasure. It is an egg stolen from the nest of the dragon, Shakala.

The egg’s hatching will fulfil the long-foretold Prophecy of Harmony and link the people of the forest with the dragon. Trailing the egg’s thieves is the tracker Kieran. It was his mistake that caused the theft.

There is another hunting the egg, the dark Mage of Remarne. With the blood of the dragon, he will grow his magick and gain immortality.

Can Meara, Kieran, and the dragon’s egg keep ahead of the mage? To do so, they must follow a trail of embers leading to the past.
